Save the Unit1 file (a compressed folder, or zip file) to a convenient location on your computer. It is 33Mb, so this may take awhile on slow connections. Once you have the zipfile on your computer and unzipped, Read the Start Here File First! Each download has a PowerPoint presentation and an exercise with real GIS data that you present as you wish. The exercise utilizes ESRI’s ArcExplorer GIS software, accessible online for free from ESRI. Instructions for downloading ArcExplorer are found in the “Start Here” document in the download.
To unzip the file with a Windows computer, you can use the extract utility in Windows Explorer, or use WINZIP software from www.winzip.com/ To unzip this file with a Macintosh, we recommend the free trail of “Stuff It” at: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/deluxe/deluxemac-trial.html Each Unit is basically the presentation that we deliver from our experiences with conservation workers in the field, and the exercise is based on stories and data from our learning. The exercises are intended to support basic GIS functions while using actual data issues happening around the world. Read the start-here-file first. It includes instructions on how to get the data organized on your computer, and how to download the free ArcGIS Explorer software.
