SERVICE AT SEA LAUNCHES A FOUR YEAR SAILING CIRCUMNAVIGATION TO BRING MAPPING TECHNOLOGY TO THE WORLD.
August 7, 2006 (San Diego, CA) – The GIS Institute is launching its flagship program, Service at Sea, today. For four years, mapping technology experts, sailors, and teachers will sail around the world facilitating conservation and heritage organizations with geo-technology to support their missions’ to protect and improve the condition of important natural and cultural sites, in a not for profit model.
Mapping technology is used by conservation and heritage organizations to track animal movement, define and assess habitat, as well as monitor changes potentially associated with global warming. The Service at Sea experience will be shared with K-12 teachers worldwide via the internet in teaching units for social studies, geography, conservation, and technology throughout the journey.
Service at Sea is launching the program from the largest geo-technology conference in the world, the ESRI, Inc. International Users Conference this week. Next year, they will launch the boat and begin the journey from the same city and conference. The route around the world has been maximized to reach as many organizations as possible, both in coastal areas and further inland. According to founder Drew Stephens, “We are helping people and organizations who are making the world a better place, and then we turn around and share that experience with teachers and children in an adventurous, educational setting. We will use GIS to help today’s stewards, while inspiring tomorrow’s”.
