Belize – GPS/GIS Field Training

Join us on Lighthouse Reef, Belize, for a week of adventure-based field data collection and integration
technical training on Long Caye.

The GIS Institute has made arrangements with the trustees of Long Caye, to support a one-week GIS and tropical field data collection course.

In the field, GIS activities begin when the first GPS is turned-on, and the first pictures are taken. Data collection requirements often include a wide range of skills and equipment, so deploying data collection teams requires planning, methodologies, and training to deploy correctly.

Background

In all the GIS-based fieldwork we’ve seen over the years, seems like the most challenging part of collecting data with any new gadget is “How do I get this data into my GIS?” The

 

What The GIS Institute will provide:

  • Transportation from Belize City, Belize, to Long Caye by chartered boat
  • Seven days total of; ArcGIS instruction, field data collection and integration experience, and an adventure on a tropical atoll!
  • All meals, drinks, and snacks from 1st Sunday lunch through Saturday breakfast – does not include alcohol
  • Single or double private room in Eco-lodge (solar power/w showers)
  • Limited solar-powered satellite internet available

What you will need to cover or bring:

  • Laptop w ArcGIS10 Evaluation or Purchased license
  • Roundtrip Air to Belize City (BZE) from your hometown
  • Hotel 1st night in BZE (Raddison or Princess Hotel)
  • Raingear (keeps it from raining!), bugspray (keeps them from showing up!), sunscreen, cameras (waterproof recommended (now also available with GPS chip!)
  • Optional – A GPS device – preferably a Trimble, Garmin, iPhone, or Android

Costs

$1950 for the entire week, includes transportation to Long Caye from Belize City, all meals/snacks, and lodging  - see above “What you will need to cover or bring”.
